Joe Muratore
Americas Director
Product Certification
|
You have an extensive background within the product testing, verification and certification services, can you tell us how you started; what is your educational background and what led you to this industry?
I discovered my interest in engineering and imagery as an avionics reconnaissance systems specialist in the U.S. Marine Corp. After leaving the service, I graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology with an engineering degree and started my second career as an Imaging Instrumentation Systems Engineer at NASA’s Ames Research where I used imaging technology and photographic science to investigate and understand the structure of various components used in flight. For example, much of my work was around supporting the computational fluid dynamics division and developing various flow visualization techniques to enable empirical testing in high-speed wind tunnels.
After NASA, I began my product verification journey starting in field of producing industrial controls used in factory automation and safety light curtains. My role included new product development, maintaining the quality management system, and working with a global distribution network to meet local regulatory requirements needed to access key markets for our products.
I further honed my corporate skills as co-owner of a successful medical imaging company, which addressed a market need for the conversion of medical modalities from analogue to digital to enable their integration to the hospital patient electronic records systems. Our high-resolution analogue to digital conversions were used by many of the Fortune 100 medical device manufacturers to extend the life of their imaging modalities that had not previously supported Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM). The integration of all these solutions were required to be tested to meet regulatory and client specific requirements.
Throughout my career, I have invented and patented a variety of products and am a published technical author in Aeronautics. This technical acumen has allowed me to help clients better define product specification and testing protocols to support the verification of their unique offerings, as well as product type testing. I feel one of my greatest strengths is combining my passion and expertise to actively work with management teams to help them differentiate their products and embed excellence.
Tell us about your role at BSI…
